L-500 Galaxy Visitors

The first Galaxy to visit Brisbane was C-5A 69-0022 (MSN 500-0053) which arrived from Pago Pago on 18 November 1984. By this time C-5s were wearing the European 1 camouflage scheme. The forecast heavy security presence did not materialise and airport staff were invited to inspect the aircraft with little or no supervision. The aircraft overnighted Brisbane before departing for Alice Springs on 19 November with several trucks destined for Pine Gap. As the aircraft was preparing to depart, one of the crew members rushed over to the compiler and thrust a copy of the loadsheet into his hand with the advice; "If we get off the ground throw it in the bin. If we don't, somebody will pick it up from you." Thankfully the aircraft did get off the ground and it is possible to record that its take-off weight was 527596 pounds. At this time Runway 04/22 was still in use and the aircraft was parked at the Temporary International Terminal at Boronia Road. (Brisbane did not see its first Antonov An-124 Ruslan until 13 January 1991.)
