A section
of wooden wing skin from the Lady Southern Cross held in the
collection of the National Library of Australia in Canberra. As shown
in the top image, the artefact is painted silver and would appear to
be from the trailing edge of the wing. The artefact measures 34cm x
10cm x 1mm. The reverse unpainted surface shown in the bottom image
is inscribed "Lady Southern Cross 1934. Taken from the wing surface
when the long range tanks were fitted before the flight Australia USA".
The inscription includes a signature thought to be that of A.H. Affleck,
a contemporary of Smithy. Arthur Affleck joined the Civil Aviation Branch
of the Australian Defence Department in 1936 as a Flying Inspector.
