A retractable undercarriage was new technology in 1934. Smithy inspects the undercarriage of his new Altair at the Union Air Terminal at Burbank on 28 June 1934. This picture has added poignancy, given that the undercarriage unit which Smithy is inspecting is all that remains of the Lady Southern Cross. It represents the only clue to the disappearance of Smithy and Tommy Pethybridge. Picture: Tim Kalina Collection |
